Trompe l’oeil, Graham Rust also has another book out called Decorative Designs, both of these are fantastic books, I also have "Trompe l’oeil At Home" by Karen S. Chambers. Outstanding book. I got a really cool book from the library this weekend. I don't remember ever seeing it mentioned here so here goes. It is "The Crafter's Guide to Glues" by Tammy Young. It looks like it would be wonderful reference book to have on hand. There are all kinds of hints about different types of glues and ways to use them, which glues to use when, and a few projects to get ideas from. British Miniature Magazines: There are two main ones , "Dollshouse World" and "Dollshouse & Miniature Scene", which are fairly similar in many ways and cost the same ( £3.25 ). There was another one called "The Dollshouse Magazine" which started more recently, but I haven't seen it on the news-stands lately, so am not sure if it is still in existence. DHW has an excellent website http://www.dollshouseworld.com which you could visit to get an idea of how the magazine looks. DH & MS also has a website http://www.emfpublishing.co.uk but it doesn't seem to be updated very often. I do believe they were offering free trial magazines fairly recently so it might be worth following that up. Both mags do lots of DIY articles , ranging from very easy, to quite difficult. I enjoy them both, but if I had to pick a favorite, it would be DHW, which is a bit naughty of me because DH&MS will be publishing an article about me later in the year!! Margaret Pitts |

Dollhouse Book: The book is titled "The Dollhouse Book" by Stephanie Finnegan, Published by Black Dog and Leventhal, ISBN 1579120776. It's shaped like a house with a peaked roof. Features the Thorne Rooms, Queen Mary's Dollhouse, Colleen Moore's Fairy Castle and many more, including pictures and detailed descriptions. NN index: Nutshell News magazine always prints a complete index of the previous year, usually in the first or second month of the new year. I remove these from the magazines keep them together in a special file. Then, when I am looking for an article, or just browsing, I take the indexes and scan them for what I am looking for, then I can go to the exact issue. Of course, I usually get distracted a couple of times along the way, but that's my fault! Ann Dowell |
Japanese Settings Reference Book: Several people have mentioned working on Japanese houses or boxes. Do you know about the Dover paperback called Japanese Homes and Their Surroundings, by Edward S. Morse? The ISBN number is 0-486-20746-3. Morse, an American who taught at the University of Tokyo for a time, found Japanese domestic style far more attractive than the elaborate, overstuffed, crowded homes of his own country. The book , which he published in 1886, is full of his line drawings, and there are sections on exteriors, roofs, interiors, wells and privies, gardens, etc. Even pictures of kitchen utensils, lamps, gateways and so on. Bought my copy over thirty years ago just for the pleasure of browsing in it, but it's still in print: Oregon's own wonderful Powell's Books (Powells.com) has several copies, both new and used. I have the Morse book written many years ago about Japanese houses - exterior and interior - and it is an excellent resource for anyone doing a Japanese mini.
